Google Photos Formats update

Google offer an interesting solution with their Photos platform for storing your images. If you’re fine with storing JPEGs (and video) up to 16 Mpx (and up to FullHD) you get unlimited free storage with Google Photos.

You can also store higher resolution videos and raw images but these will count to your storage quota.

Google have now introduced some new rules so some of your video files may now count against your quota.

Here are the newly updated supported image and video file formats accepted by Google as part of your free storage:

Images

  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • WEBP
  • Some raw files

Videos

  • MPEG
  • MP4
  • MOV
  • WMV
  • AVI
  • DIVX
  • M4V
  • MKV

and a few more.

Any videos that don’t fit here will count towards your storage.
